HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that can lead to death. With urgent medical care to restart the heart, survival is possible.

Quick decision making is required to recognise and assess a cardiac emergency, call for medical assistance and perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures which will increase the chance of survival for a person who is unconscious and not breathing normally.

In this CPR course, you will learn these skills, in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, including using an automated external defibrillator (AED), how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions, and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits.

The course also covers conveying accurate incident details when handing the casualty over to emergency services, how to review an incident, to recognise any psychological impacts on self and other rescuers, to seek help if required and for improvement of own personal skills and response times.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins

Blended Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours

Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 20 Mins

Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Assessment Requirements

Does HLTAID009 expire?

In adult learning there is no concept of expiration of knowledge, we refer to the date you need to renew your training as the "industry recommended renewal date". In Australia the Safe Work Australia and industry specific regulations require that in order to be recognised as holding 'current' CPR qualifications you need to undertake your HLTAID009 course annually. Therefore all certificates issued by Allens Training have a recommended renewal date of 12 months form the date of issue.

Is HLTAID009 included in the HLTAID011 First Aid Course?

Yes, all of the competencies for HLTAID009 are covered in the first aid course (HLTAID011), therefore all certificates for HLTAID011 will also list the HLTAID009 unit. It is important to remember that the renewal period for HLTAID009 is only 12 months where the HLTAID011 is considered current for a 3 year period.

Is HLTAID009 included in the Care and Education First Aid Course (HLTAID012)?

Yes, all of the competencies for HLTAID009 are included in the HLTAID012 course. Therefore certificates for HLTAID012 will also contain the unit HLTAID009. It is important to remember that to be considered current in industry you need to renew the HLTAID009 unit every 12 months, where the HLTAID012 unit is considered current for 3 years.

What is the difference between HLTAID009 and HLTAID011?

The HLTAID009 unit is considered a CPR unit. It covers the basics of emergency response, providing resuscitation, including defibrillator use and handing over the incident. The HLTAID011 is a comprehensive first aid course containing all of the knowledge obtained in the HLTAID009 as well as the first aid treatment for a wide range of first aid emergencies. To be considered a first aider in a standard workplace the HLTAID011 is the primary qualification however it is important to maintain currency in the HLTAID009 unit by refreshing it every 12 months.

What does HLTAID009 include?

The key elements of the course HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation are, responding to an emergency situation (DRSABCD), providing CPR to adults and infants, communicating details of the incident and reviewing the incident.

Does HLTAID009 include asthma and anaphylaxis?

No, the course HLTAID009 focuses on the primary response and provision of CPR. There are a number of courses available for those wanting to undertake training in asthma and anaphylaxis, these include HLTAID011 Provide First Aid which is a standard workplace first aid qualification, HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. There are also stand alone Asthma and Anaphylaxis courses, these can be undertaken one by one or as part of a course set. The specific course required will depend on your workplace and industry requirements.

Are there any physical requirements for undertaking HLTAID009

Yes, in order to be deemed competent and obtain a certificate you must be able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor. This is a mandatory requirement in the unit of competency and cannot be waived even with evidence of a medical exemption. For those unable to perform this task you are more than welcome to attend to obtain knowledge but you will not be able to obtain the HLTAID009 certificate.

Can HLTAID009 be fully completed online?

There are a number of practical skills required to be performed using specialised training equipment in order to be deemed competent. It is for this reason that in most cases the students will need to attend a training location for at least part of the training (depending on the selected delivery mode). In some exceptional circumstances where the full range of training equipment is available and it can be demonstrated that it is not possible to attend a training location (for example working in a remote location) the an application can be made by your Training Provider to assess the skills via teleconferencing. This application will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

What delivery modes are available for HLTAID009?

We are pleased to be able to offer the HLTAID009 in a number of different delivery modes. These are:

Online with Face to Face

The full title for this delivery mode is online training with face to face assessment. Courses using this delivery mode have all of the knowledge content and assessments completed online before you attend a short face to face assessment session where you trainer will briefly recap the learning and assess you in the practical skills component of the course. This mode offers the shortest face to face delivery option.

Face to Face

As the name suggests the face to face delivery mode involves all course content being delivered during class time. Using this delivery mode there is no requirement to complete pre-course work and all of the knowledge, along with the theory assessment and skills assessments are delivered in the face to face session with your Trainer. This mode has the longest face to face delivery component.

Blended Delivery

With blended delivery the student is required to complete a small amount of online learning prior to the face to face component of the training. This online learning provides the learner with background information and consequently reduces the face to face duration of the training. Although some questions will be asked in the pre-course work, all of the formal theory assessment and skills assessments occur in the face to face component of the course. Within this course your Trainer will still cover all of the theory elements of the training however will move through at a faster rate when compared with the face to face delivery mode. This offers a reduced duration when compared with face to face delivery mode.

Refresher

With refresher training the face to face component of the training is the same as it is for blended delivery. The only difference is due to the student possessing a current or recently expired certificate in the same course (less than 3 months after the renewal date) they do not need to complete the online pre-course work component.

Blended/Refresher

When enrolling in this course the system will identify if you possess the relevant certificate to qualify for refresher training. You will also be given an opportunity to upload certificates issued by another RTO when confirming enrolment details. The system will then automatically select either blended or refresher mode for you. As the face to face component is the same this will only change the requirement to complete pre-course work.

Does HLTAID009 include First Aid?

In short no. The elements delivered as part of the HLTAID009 are included in first aid and an important element of first aid knowledge however beyond that there are no other first aid topics covered in the CPR course.

Is HLTAID009 the same as HLTAID001

HLTAID009 is the current unit of competency for CPR training. It superseded the previous version (HLTAID001) in October 2020. The units contain very similar knowledge however students wishing to undertake CPR training must now complete the HLTAID009 unit as this is the only current unit available.

When being assessed for CPR as part of HLTAID009 do you need to provide rescue breaths?

Yes. The requirements for rescue breaths for part of the requirements of the unit of competency and also are still recommended in the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines which are the basis for the content delivered in this course.

Is there a minimum age for undertaking HLTAID009?

Although we do not set a minimum age for undertaking CPR training, all participants must be physically able to perform the skills and have sufficient maturity for the content delivered. Generally speaking we would not recommend this course for those under 12 years of age.

When undertaking HLTAID009 using the delivery mode online with face to face assessment, how long do I need to allow for the online work?

Participants should allow 1 to 2 hours for the online work portion of the HLTAID009 when completing this using the online with face to face assessment delivery mode. It is important that this work is completed prior to the face to face assessment.
